How long does the counselling process take?

Each individual and their situation is different therefore timelines vary. There are some situations that can take 3-6 sessions while others can take longer with bimonthly or monthly sessions. 

How do I know counselling is going to be effective?

There are a few factors that go into how effective counselling is. Possibly one of the most important is that you and your counsellor are a good fit, this is something that is determined after either an initial phone  consultation or the first session.  Another is that counselling growth takes work and commitment from both parties. If this is not adhered to then there is no progress.

What is the difference between talking to a counsellor or a family/friend?

Mental health professionals bring a different perspective on situations that our support systems sometimes cannot. We have tools that we provide and skills that we teach that allow you to process situations

Is virtual therapy as effective as in person?

Virtual therapy is just as effective as in person therapy for most people. The positives are that you can have your sessions from the comfrot of your own home and that the timings are more flexible.

At Quintessential Counselling we do not recommend virtual sessions for youth until a relationship has been built between the client and counsellor during in person therapy. 

Isn't counselling for people who are weak?

It is a misconception that counselling is for the weak, on the contrary counselling takes alot of courage. We work through emotions and situations that can be scary and difficult to face but once these challenges are worked through comes strength and knowledge.

Does my extended health cover counselling?

Most extended health companies cover counselling sessions, we suggest you double check your policy and also mention to us who your provider is so that we can confirm if we are covered through them. 

We provide you with a receipt once payment has been received and you are responsible for submitting the claim for reimbursement.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your session we require a 24 hour notice otherwise you will receive an invoice for a missed session. We will then charge the credit card on file for the missed session. We do understand that emergencies happen and those are reviewed in a case by case basis.

What if I can't afford counselling?

At Quintessential Counselling we beleive that everyone should be able to have access to counselling. We offer a sliding scale and we alway encourage everyone to speak with their counsellor before walking away from the counselling process discouranged.
